Plastic Birds Aviary

My favourite project at the CPUT Design Exhibition was this ‘Jungle’.

This was a first year Industrial Design Project. The students were asked to study a bird and collect plastic (preformed) from all sorts of places (grandma’s cupboards, recycling bins …. etc). They then constructed the birds – first in black and white and then in colour.

My favourite’s are the owls (especially the one on the right). I can imagine him sitting in my tree under the watchful eyes of Pye my cat. They are so animated.

…and the penguin (left) is a close second favourite. I wish these two could have followed me home.

Awesome! Reminds me of my first year at high school when all the Gr 8’s had to create “dogs” from litter and other odds and ends and drag them around on “leashes.” I have fond memories of my sausage dog created from a 450ml coke can and a random mustard sock! Of course, these are vastly superior – but isn’t is awesome what characters lurk in discarded rubbish? Great work! :)
