From old coins to new coins I love the new face of the British currency which I saw on blog Swissmiss earlier this week. The designs were selected from an open competition that attracted 4,000 entries. Announced by the Royal Mint, Matthew Dent, a young graphic designer from London, won with his developed heraldic theme.
As you can see in the image to the right, the Shield of the Royal Arms has been given a contemporary treatment and its whole has been split among all six denominations from the 1p to the 50p, with the £1 coin displaying the heraldic element in its entirety. This is the first time that a single design has been used across a range of United Kingdom coins.
I think it is so clever and classifies, by my definition, as good design.
